A NEEDED SITUATION ANALYSIS FROM THE SUNLIGHT POLICY CENTER OF NEW JERSEY
Last May, Sean Spiller, the Vice President of the NJEA – the most powerful special interest in the state – was elected mayor of Montclair.
Sunlight Policy Center provided a detailed report examining the FACTS behind Mr. Spiller’s major conflict of interest and, if elected, how this could affect Montclair and its school district. Montclair voters apparently took notice and Spiller was elected by a razor-thin margin.
Now, only a few months into his term and during an on-going pandemic, we are already seeing the negative effects of a deeply conflicted mayor…
This week, Montclair was forced to cancel its scheduled in-school learning, when – at the last minute – Spiller’s own union refused to show up to work.
Bringing Sunlight’s concerns to life, Mayor Spiller has openly aligned with his union on re-opening schools and contributed to current impasse. Rather than leading his town out of the problem, Spiller is part of it.
Parents are now protesting the actions of the union, citizens are now demanding an elected school board, and Montclair’s district superintendent is now even taking Spiller’s union to court.
The on-going turmoil has helped create headlines in the New York Times, New York Magazine, and a variety of New Jersey publications
It’s time to learn the facts.
