More strong, unequivocal words about the rule of law and political corruption from New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin. According to the New Jersey Globe, Platkin had this to say about President Biden’s pardon of his son, Hunter:
We can’t care about the rule of law some of the time. We can’t care about corruption some of the time. It’s pass fail.
Those are admirable words from AG Platkin, although they are just words because Platkin can take no actions to fortify his words because President Biden’s pardon power is rooted in the US Constitution.
But that is not true in New Jersey, where Platkin is the top law enforcement officer in the state. In New Jersey, Platkin can back up his words with action. Presumably, Platkin’s strong, unequivocal words about the rule of law and political corruption also apply to New Jersey. That would mean that the rule of law must always be enforced against political corruption.
So we ask AG Platkin again: will the rule of law be applied to Gov. Murphy’s pals Sean Spiller and Brendan Gill? Spiller has been under “ongoing” criminal investigation for allegedly abusing state health benefits — for two years! And there’s no sign that Gill is under investigation at all for doing the same thing. Meanwhile, three Wildwood officials were indicted for abusing state health benefits, with one pleading guilty and facing potential jail time.
Will AG Platkin back up his noble words with action? As AG Platkin said, himself: it’s pass/fail.
