NJ’s Most Powerful Special Interest, the NJEA, Spends 93% of Its PAC Money on Democrats
Since Sunlight Policy Center of New Jersey began shining a light on the entrenched power of the NJEA – many teachers have shared their complaints about their executive leadership – and we get a lot of them.
…New Jersey teachers have voiced concerns that their dues are the highest in the country.
…New Jersey teachers are upset that their dues have made millionaires of their executive leaders.
…New Jersey teachers are angry that their hard work funds the outside political career of their president, Sean Spiller….
But universally, we hear one constant from teachers across New Jersey – they are tired of the millions and millions of political spending by the NJEA.
Sunlight’s latest report digs into the NJEA’s ELEC filings for the facts:
Overall, for the last decade, 93% of NJEA PAC contributions went to Democrats, almost 14x the 7% to Republicans.
Every one of the top ten legislative recipients of NJEA PAC money was a Democrat.
At the county and municipal level, 97% of contributions went to Democrats.
We doubt the NJEA’s membership is 93% Democrat….so we will leave it to our great teachers and the political pundits to opine on this data.
What we do is shine a light on this roadmap of how the biggest, most powerful special interest targets its tens of millions in political spending.
