The Star-Ledger published Sunlight’s op-ed on how NJ spent $4.7 billion on NJ’s broken and unreformed public pension system. That’s billions that we desperately need for COVID relief for families and small businesses. And the situation is likely to get worse.
The sad truth is that Gov. Murphy is taking care of his public union pals at the NJEA, who deserve the lion’s share of the blame for the severe underfunding of teachers’ pensions.
NJ teachers must wake up to the fact that the NJEA allowed their pensions to be at risk. They need to demand answers from their leadership. And they need to demand reforms that will secure their pensions and retirements – like Senator Sweeney’s Path to Progress plan – which the NJEA continues to obstruct.
