The Star-Ledger’s Tom Moran calls for the legislature to override Gov. Murphy’s veto of a bill requiring disclosure of “dark money” donors for political ads. Moran makes many good points but neglects to point out the FACT that in the case at hand – where Murphy appears in the TV ads of New Direction New Jersey – it is the NJEA who is funding the ads. The NJEA is a close ally of Murphy’s and his positions and language in the ads closely tracks the NJEA’s positions and language. These FACTS make a much stronger case for enacting the dark money disclosure law because the conflict of interest is so blatant, and the public should know the truth. It’s hard to understand why as shrewd an observer of New Jersey politics as Moran would leave out these salient facts.
